Very Good Product | |
| I have to admit that I was hesitant to buy this booster because of all the trouble everyone was having. I bought it anyway based on the success of some of the reviewers and their instructions to others to get it to work.
I pretty much followed their instructions to get this device to work but was not successful. So I let it sit unused for a couple of days deciding whether to send it back to amazon or eat the loss. I decided to try one more time. Since I never used the setup wizard cd that came with it I decided to give that a try. Well what do you know? Apparently Linksys or Cisco has finally got it together with this device. Heeding the advise of others to disable wep encrytion before starting, I disable the wpa encryption that my router wrt54gs is configured for. Popped in the setup cd and followed the instructions and voila everything worked flawlessly, the way linksys products have done in the past. Once I got both blue l.e.d.s I connected to the wre54g thru its network jack using the default ip and password and enabled wpa encryption first. I then re-enabled wpa on my wrt54gs, and on my wireless laptop and its working like a charm. The label on the bottom has wre54g v2 as the model. It came with firmware version 2.01.10 already installed. My wrt54gs had firmware version 3.37.1 in it, but I downloaded and installed v3.37.6 without a hitch before I started setting up the wre54g. I'm giving it a 4 star rating and not a 5 star because I could never get the wre54g to setup by just using the automatic setup button found on its housing.
Works fine with compatible equipment
| I found the setup and installation for the Linksys Range Expander was fairly simple when connecting it to a secured Linksys router. My speed at the periphery of my router was running at about 38Mbits and jumped immediately to 54Mbits once the Range Expander was installed. I had spent a good bit of time earlier making sure the router was configured and security enabled while replacing the older 11b equipment I had been using. If you aren't familiar with networking, I would suggest getting help from the outset. It may save on some of the frustration folks experience. Use the Linksys utilities rather than those proffered by the operating system. Mixing the two up in the process of installation can definitely cause problems. | |

| Do not waste your money on this piece of junk. I never ever got it to work even after numerous attempts. I struggled through the cryptic online instructions and wasted hours with the useless phone support personal who spoke an unrecognizable form of english. | |
