I have been happy with the results produced by this product. I used this scanner to scan my original slides for posting to my website http://www.newyorkslideshow.com (review the results there)

However the scanner is a little quirky, if you follow these steps you should have few issues:

1) Do not attach the device until you have installed the vendor provided software (read the manual for full instructions)
2) Do not turn the device on until your PC has fully booted
3) Always have the door closed when starting the scanning software - wait until it grumbles about there being no slide holder inserted - then insert the slide holder

The image scanning isn't razor sharp - but good enough for a device costing $240. The manual focus operation is impossible to use - so if the autofocus scan fails you're out of luck.

I bought the scanner after extensive search on the internet and asked a few frieds who are computer savvy.

I am extremely disappointed with this scanner. This is my first scanner and I thought it is a piece of cake once I got the stuff. However the scanner would hardly ever scan one slide with out causing trouble There were more error messages than work done by this machine. Also the companion booklet does not give the meaning of error messages .

Over all I am extremely disappointed and do not know whom to call for help.

I have had the Konica Minolta Dimage Scan Dual IV for about a year. I use it with MAC OSX. The scanner comes with a good 99 page instruction manual. Most of the features are explained well in the manual with lots of pictures illustrating the instructions. There are 4 modes of operation: EASY SCAN UTILITY, BATCH SCAN UTILITY, DS DUAL 4 UTILITY "Basic", and DS DUAL 4 UTILITY"Advanced". If you know nothing about film scanning the EASY SCAN UTILITY MODE is very easy to use, it's for beginners. You will soon find it too easy with too few features then you are ready to move on to the DS DUAL 4 UTILITY"Basic" mode which has a lot more features. If you want to make more complicated adjustments for your scans then you can use the DS DUAL 4 UTILITY"Advanced" mode. I stick with the DS DUAL 4 UTILITY"Basic" mode, it has enough features for me. The BATCH SCAN UTILITY mode is good if you have a lot of negatives or slides to scan. The scanner also has basic and advanced image processing that can be done when scanning. I don't use it, I process the image in the included Photoshop Elements 2.0 software. The scanner doesn't have ICE software or in other words automatic dust removal software. ICE is handy when you scan in slides because there is a lot of dust on slides that can't be wiped off easily because of the slide holder. The dust then shows up as black spots when scanned. ICE removes this dust automatically. This saves you lots of time since you don't have to go back and remove lots of dust particles from your scan. Dust is less of a problem with negative film because you can clean the film easier because there is no slide holder trapping the dust in. Sometimes I have to relaunch the scanning software because it doesn't recognize the scanner is connected to the computer. This happens rarely. So if you have a lot of slides to scan you may want to get another scanner which includes ICE software. Other wise this scanner can scan up to 3200 d.p.i. which will allow you to make very sharp prints up to 10 X 15". Considering the features this scanner has and the price, $300, this is a very good deal. A cheap scanner with a lot of advanced features good for the beginner, amateur and advanced amateur photographer.
